Jun 14th - Montpellier
A bit of a quiet day today as we spent a fair bit of time doing ‘domestic…y’ type duties.
We did however spend a long morning wandering through the Musée Fabre, the city’s major art gallery. The works housed here are mainly from the 16th to 20th centuries but also include works by Francois Fabre, a local artist after whom the museum is named. It’s a huge collection, well laid out in attractive but confusing galleries, and mainly paintings with the occasional statue as well. Highlights for us, when we actually found them, were the old Flemish Masters, including Brueghel and Jan Steen, plus a few of the French impressionists as well. Although not up there with the Louvre or Prado this is a great collection of European masters and other lesser known artists, and, apart from the permanent ‘Contemporary’ exhibition, we would highly recommend it.

Five of Pierre Soulages ‘Black Collection’! Seriously? 🤮 |
Would you agree 'Old Masters' is an appropriate term when juxtaposed to the 'Back Collection' and others of its ilk? ;-)
