Jun 15th - Montpellier to Carcassonne
Travel day
Moving on today to Carcassonne, famous for its medieval walled fortress as well as being the home of one of France’s best culinary dishes (imho!), cassoulet 😋.
On arrival the walk from the station to our accommodation was through the lovely, but small, old town (not through the walled city though, that’s up on the hills) and we both soon agreed that it’s going to be a lovely place to stay.
We’d already decided that tomorrow we’re going to hire bikes and go for a ride, so, with only this afternoon as ‘spare-time’, as soon as we checked-in we were quickly out and on our way up to the old citadel.
Spectacular from a distance when approaching, this medieval city with its surrounding walls, turrets, and ramparts, is amazing when close up.

Also home to one of the the town’s major churches, the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, there’s also the remains of a substantial ‘Chateau’, both of which is where we spent some hours walking around admiring the architecture and views.
