Jun 16th - Carcassonne

Out for a bike ride today, along the ‘Canal du Midi’, and one of the main reasons for us coming back to Carcassonne.  This magnificent UNESCO Heritage listed canal, constructed between 1666 & 1681, is 240 kms in length and the connecting waterway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and is considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century.

Having hired a couple of, not quite, rust-bucket bikes, and with the brake levers on the ‘wrong’ sides, we took off for Trèves, a lovely little village 15 kms from Carcassonne.  This really was a stunning ride, and with its numerous oval-shaped locks, lovely scenery through vineyards, farm and woodlands, we had a fantastic day

  1. Looking at the pics I think the U3A group should organize a leisurely ~5 day ride across its length :-)

  2. Yes, I am not sure how the body would hold up - the bikes had suspension on front wheel and seat but we still suffered. The bike shop man asked ‘how did it go?’ PD replied it was great but he had a sore arse….short delay….Oh mon dieu!!!
