Jun 5th - Marseille to Avignon
Travel Day
Wow! Only 90 minutes from Marseille and, OMG, what a contrast, Avignon is luvverly!!!! 😀
No noise, no traffic, no people, no cruise ships, for starters, but then there’s a walled city, medieval palaces, honey coloured buildings, an aura of history, cafes, and then tree lined squares. As they say here “Quelle difference!” 😊
On a walk around town we headed off to the famous, and incomplete, ‘Pont d’Avignon’ of nursery rhyme fame. Built in the the early 1200’s this stone bridge had 22 arches and was nearly a kilometre in length. However, the bridge was abandoned in the mid-17th century as the arches tended to collapse each time the Rhône flooded making it too expensive to maintain. Only four arches have survived along with the Chapel of Saint Nicholas which sits on the second pier of the bridge.
