Jul 17th - Chipping Campden to Bourton-on-the-Water

Another knock-on from the cancellation of our accommodation in Stow was us missing out on the trek from there to Bourton-on-the-Water.  As this hike would’ve included the two villages of Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter we decided to give these two a visit after our arrival in Bourton.

Largely following the rivers Eye and Windrush, we walked through some lovely farm and woodlands (including a bit of a ‘detour’, oops! 🙄😊), before reaching our destinations.

With the name ‘Slaughter’ derived from the Old English word ‘slohtre’, meaning ’wetland’, these beautiful villages are over 1000 years old and both get a mention in the Domesday Book.

Despite its unfortunate sounding name Upper Slaughter is only one of 14 villages in England and Wales that lost no serving personnel during both WWI and WWII, making them proud members of the ‘Doubly Thankful Village’  classification.

  1. The scenes posted are all idyllic and beyond 'chocolate box' beauty.

    1. Yes it really is beautiful…if only the sun would come out for longer. Today we are walking about 20km so I am checking the weather app and the looming clouds
