Jul 18th - Bourton-on-the-Water
With no hiking planned we spent the day checking out the local sights before wandering off around some of the local lakes and rivers that supply the ‘water’ in Bourton-in-the-Water
Busy Bourton-in-the-Water, a.k.a. ‘Little Venice’, is another beautiful sandstone village and, with the River Windrush running through the centre of it, and it’s half a dozen bridges, is probably the most well known in the Cotswolds. The river, overlooked by a number of pub gardens, restaurants, and coffee shops, is also shallow enough to go for a quick paddle, so no wonder the place is so popular.
The lakes, all previous gravel pits, are now run by local angling clubs who have done a terrific job in returning the surrounding areas back to their previous ‘natural environment’. Consequently the birdlife was fantastic and so we spent ages ‘twitching’!
